This position is a dual-track role requiring a high-cadence technical expert (70% drafting, 30% change coordination). The ideal candidate is a "closer"—a self-starting professional with a passion for precision draftsmanship and the technical acumen to manage complex configurations with minimal supervision. You will lead the creation of production-level design drawings and manage the end-to-end lifecycle of engineering change requests using SolidWorks and advanced PDM/PLM tools.

This is an on-site role located in Torrance, CA.


Responsibilities:
 
  • Master-level preparation, or modification of complex CAD models and production design drawings (MIL STD level 2 & 3), BOMs and documents with MCAD (SolidWorks preferred) and MSOffice tools as needed per CM and drafting standards including ASME Y14-100, Y14.5 (GD&T), Y14.24 ensuring 100% accuracy
  • Collaborate on 2D and 3D models, sketches, layouts, and assemblies with the engineering team.
  • Take full ownership of the "Closing" phase: create process, status, and audit Change Orders (COs) to ensure they are consistent, compliant, and ready for production release.
  • Drawings/ layouts that show the details for a wide variety of commodities including machined parts, sheet metal, injection molded parts, laser cut parts, rapid prototype or 3D printed parts, wire harnesses and cable assemblies, mechanical tools and assemblies.
  • Create, input and extract part and bill of material (BOM) data from Engineering Drawings/SolidWorks PLM into and from various CM databases including CM/PLM (QCBD), and ERP (Costpoint).
  • Assist Configuration Management in organizing and maintaining product design and technical files for products in production needing sustainment (all types; SolidWorks drawings, 3D models, Source control drawings, vendor item control drawings, tabulated drawings, etc.).  Experience with any PLM/PDM/CM databases or tools especially SolidWorks PDM is a plus.
  • Create, process, status, and update engineering change requests (ECR’s), change orders (CO’s), and Configuration Items per CM procedures in support of engineering programs and quality management system (ISO9001: AS9100).
  • Review and validate, with help from configuration manager and engineering, change orders for consistency including change description, classification, and efficiency.
  • Review change items (drawing and documents) submitted on Change Orders for consistency with CM and corporate/Industry standard drafting styles.
  • Review for consistency, with help from Configuration Manager, the Change Impact Analysis on COs and ECRs with engineering, planning and production staff.
  • (Optional) Work with IT to facilitate PDM database management, including new employee account creation, project permissions, file state management, and assistance with the process of updating software during new version rollouts.

Requirements:
 
  • Technical AS Degree in Drafting/Design or equivalent military/technical certification.
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment, specifically in a "Lead" or "Senior" capacity.
  • Preferred - Technical AS Degree in Drafting/Design with 7+ years of experience
  • Capable of producing high quality manufacturing drawings that apply ASME standards e.g., Y14.5 using GD&T.
  • Proven work experience as a Drafter or similar role with Engineering change coordinator related experience.
  • Expert-level proficiency in SolidWorks and PDM Administration. Proficiency in secondary tools like AutoCAD, Inventor, or Pro-Engineer is highly preferred. SolidWorks Certifications are a bonus: CSWE – Modeling, CWSPA – Drawing Tools to demonstrate proficiency with drafting and CAD model manipulation.
  • Ability to utilize multiple word-processing and database applications including MS Office applications Word, Excel, Access, as well as Adobe Acrobat, etc. (intermediate/advance skills a plus).
  • Creativity, strong problem-solving and organizational skills, excellent technical writing, and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Proven "Closer" Mindset: Demonstrated ability to finalize drawing packages and drive them through the approval cycle to successful production release with zero-error output.
  • High Detail Orientation: Advanced understanding of dimensioning, tolerancing (GD&T), and documentation for a variety of commodities including machined, sheet metal, and wire harness assemblies.
  • Must be capable of executing daily decisions and managing project timelines with very little supervision.
  • Hands on experience & interaction with mechanical engineering is preferred but not required – emphasis on a strong ability to communicate technical details with engineering when implementing drawing or model updates.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

Pay Range:

$39.00-$50.00/hour

However, base salary for this position will vary based on your skills, qualifications, and experience.
