We’re seeking a Director, Business Development for Airborne Systems. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced business professional to significantly contribute to the growth of an expanding organization through strategic planning, opportunity pursuit/capture, leadership, and execution. The Director, Business Development will be responsible for managing all aspects of the business development/capture lifecycle, from opportunity creation/identification through award and follow-on customer communications, including providing the “voice of the customer” to our organization.  The candidate will report to the Senior Director of Business Development for Airborne Systems

The successful candidate must work closely with the VP/GM of the Airborne Systems segment and his/her team. They will present a proven track record of winning pursuits of avionics systems for military aircraft.  This candidate will attend industry and government conferences, present to potential and existing customers, understand defense acquisition and government contracting, provide guidance on internal research and development (IR&D) activities, present business case analyses for technology/product/program investments, pursue customer funding to develop these technologies, and manage their portfolio within the airborne systems department forecast.

The candidate must quickly assume responsibility for capturing large size military aviation programs, while having the ability to assist other BD professionals with ground vehicle programs and other low TRL/emerging technology programs, as well as the successful transition from program capture to execution. The successful candidate will assume a leadership role in managing the growth of the airborne systems business area.

As Director, Business Development, You’ll:

  • Identify and capture new military business opportunities predominantly in the Airborne Systems area, including relevant Small Business Innovation Research with focus on year over year revenue growth.
  • Support strategic long-range planning, market analyses, and forecast data for DoD market sectors.
  • Prepare technology and/or product roadmaps to ensure our pursuits align with our strategies and customer needs.
  • Understand avionics technologies and products, particularly displays, controls, avionics/mission computing, data/video recorders and switches, video converters, data concentrator units, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors, electrical power management systems, avionics embedded software, etc.
  • Lead capture and proposal writing activities with a focus on customer requirements, program management planning and budget, competitive intelligence and price-to-win analyses.
  • Once business case is approved, present a “go to market” strategy that outlines how our organization will win in the designated market segment. 
  • Collaborate with corporate marketing personnel to launch product marketing campaigns.
  • Conduct customer engagements and customer call planning with the purpose of establishing critical trust with senior leaders in Program Offices or with Prime contractors.
  • Establish, maintain, and expand relationships with key suppliers to increase competitive position through collaboration and partnership.
  • Identify strategic alliances, teammates and partners for key pursuit opportunities.
  • Participate in relevant trade shows, industry days and seminars to stay abreast of customer strategies, goals and objectives.
  • Use customer relationships to help obtain the necessary funding to develop or modify avionics products.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for Foreign Military Sales, or Direct Commercial Sales of existing ISI products in compliance with current ITAR and US Export restrictions.
  • Earn the trust and respect of the internal team, including executive suite.
  • Will be required to travel up to 50%.

What You’ll Bring:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree (engineering major preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience and demonstrated results in Business Development for U.S. Army Aviation, rotary wing OEMs, and similar helicopter customers.
  • 5+ years of experience working with avionics related products and technologies, including writing proposals, maintaining roadmaps, business cases, and understanding of the market dynamics.
  • Relevant experience working with a variety of rotary wing aviation platforms and the avionics and mission systems onboard.
  • Practical understanding of technology transitioning, product/market development, and marketing/product planning for US military applications.
  • Knowledge of conducting and directing competitive product analysis using market research techniques and a solid technical understanding of service/agency needs and requirements.
  • Must have superior proposal development/writing and basic contracting/negotiation skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, excellent communication (presentation, written, and verbal), and relationship building skills. Good problem-solving ability to work with a diverse work force.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required. Must be willing and able to obtain a Security Clearance or have active Secret Security Clearance.
  • 5+ years’ experience in engineering is preferred.
  • Relevant experience in Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) a plus.
  • Pilot experience in the DoD is a plus.
  • Business degree is a plus.
  • Full time presence at our Torrance, CA facility is highly preferred.

Pay Range:

$157,000-$215,000 + quarterly bonus

However, base salary for this position will vary based on your skills, qualifications, and experience.
