We are looking for an exceptional Research Scientist to join our Emerging Technologies team.  This team works on cutting-edge optical sensor research involving innovative design, selection, and implementation of emerging optoelectronic components, as well as system integration, testing, and troubleshooting.  

As part of the team, you will work alongside other experienced scientists and engineers to develop novel, cutting-edge solutions to several challenging problems.  Understanding and experience with optical and electro-optical, opto-mechanical, and opto-electronic components and systems design, implementation and application, signal and image processing (algorithms and hardware), sensors are desired. This is a hands-on research and development position with some project management responsibilities.

Responsibilities:
 
  • Lead the creation of new concept/architecture design, development, and implementation activities related to optical sensor and optical imaging components/systems development including performance simulation, prototyping, and testing.
  • Apply experience in the use of modern programming, modeling/simulation tools to help develop new technologies.
    • Intellisense primarily uses COMSOL, ZEMAX, Matlab/Simulink, C/C++, Python, LabVIEW, OpenGL and OpenCV libraries
  • Procure according to developed system architecture and validate components and integrate and test system prototypes.
  • Apply principle of design of experiments to construct optical system testing setup.
  • Work alongside engineering and research teams in researching, selecting, evaluating, and/or developing component/system and packaging with specific applications in mind.
  • Interact with government and non-government representatives to ensure customer requirements are fully understood and addressed.
  • Lead/provide technical write-ups related to system, hardware, and software development for bids and proposals.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements:
 
  • PhD in Photonics, Applied/Experimental Physics, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 0-2+ years’ direct experience in optical components/system design, development, laboratory and field prototyping and implementation for EO/IR applications (including years of post-doctoral study.)
  • Good knowledge of photonics, physical parameters measurement, design, building, testing, analysis, and evaluation of optical/photonic systems.
  • Ability to contribute to development, analysis and troubleshooting of component/system performance.
  • Desire to perform design of experiments, assemble test setups, perform tests, analyze results, relate the results to goals/theory/predictions and make conclusions relevant to development.
  • Ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously, achieving required results on time and on budget.
  • Ability to present technical concepts and designs to Senior Management and customers in clear and succinct form.
  • Excellent technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills to prepare technical proposals and documentation.

Nice to Haves:
 
  • Familiarity with EO/IR simulation software.
  • Knowledge of free space optical communication and fiber optic communication.
  • US citizenship is preferred (US person status is required)

  • Understanding/training on laser safety and tests standards
  • Familiarity with electronics and communication (including fiber optic) systems and devices

Pay Range:

$100,000-$145,000
However, base salary for this position will vary based on your skills, qualifications, and experience.
